CMAS coming up soon

Next week our students will begin taking our state tests in English, math, science and social studies, called the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS).

As with past years, the tests will be divided into sections that will be administered over several days. Students are not being tested for any lengthier time frame than in past years, schools must spread the tests out over a longer time frame based on computer availability.  There are simply not enough computers to have every student testing at the same time.  The English Language Arts and Math tests will be taken in two blocks. The first block is given earlier because it contains more writing tasks that must be hand graded, and that will take more time.  The second block will be given at the end of the school year, and it can be completely scored by computers.

Your child’s participation is important! The results will help you know how your son or daughter is performing and growing over time and how that compares to his/her peers. You deserve to know!

Strong participation is critical for our teachers and administrators to understand if our school is doing all it can to help our students prepare for success in college, career and life.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to take a look at the practice tests available through the Colorado Department of Education’s website at http://www.cde.state.co.us/assessment/CMASPracticeTest.

If you’d like to learn more about the new standards or tests, CDE has a number of additional resources on its website at http://www.cde.state.co.us/communications/resourcesforparents.

CMAS/PARCC TESTING ANNOUNCEMENT
Regarding CMAS/PARCC testing next week:

Much mis-information is circling regarding PARCC testing and the ability to "opt out" .

Dr. Delay has posted a much more detailed letter on the district website regarding this misinformation including this portion:

"Although the Colorado State Board of Education voted last week to hold districts harmless for non- participation in the CMAS/PARCC assessments, they do not have the authority to waive Federal requirements under No Child Left Behind.  Under this law, passed with bi-partition support in the George W. Bush administration of 2001, states are required to have 95% of students participate in the mathematics and reading assessments. Failure to meet this participation rate would mean loss of funding for the district and the state. Any extra teachers, tutors and other staff paid with federal dollars would be unfunded, and subject to a Reduction in Force under Colorado law."

Additionally, there is mis-information going around that if students "fail" the PARCC assessment, they will be held out of concurrent enrollment (college) or AP courses.  This is exactly the opposite of what could happen.

CMAS/PARCC is being accepted by some colleges for entrance in the very near future.  So if students would not take it, they are themselves removing an option to qualify for courses and college.  It is to their benefit to take the test and do their best on it.  Ultimately, the school district and building administration make decisions on who qualifies for courses (AP and Concurrent enrollment) and we do use a body of evidence to determine if they should be allowed to take those courses.  By not taking the CMAS/PARCC, that action could have an impact on decisions we would make in terms of not allowing students to take those courses because we wouldn't have a full body of evidence.  It really is in everyone's  best interests to take the test.

Please keep in mind, due to the computerized format of the test, it appears we do have more days of testing.  However, the amount of time that students are in testing sessions is less than the previous TCAP and CSAP testing formats. The full schedule of testing sessions and the modified master schedule is on the website as well.

If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact a building administrator or counselor.  We would be happy to answer your questions.
